Join us May 24th for Sustainable Kingston’s First Annual Evening of Recognition and the inaugural presentation of Kingston’s Sustainable Leadership Awards!
The 1st of the 5 Sustainable Leadership Award’s is Sustainable Kingston’s Champion of the Year. This award will be presented to an individual who has worked to advance the cause of one or more of Sustainable Kingston’s Six Priority Areas.
This year the Kingston Community nominated 10 Sustainability Champions! Each of these individuals deserves recognition for their outstanding work making Kingston a more livable and resilient city.
The Nominees:
Kathy Rothermel:
Nominated for her work establishing and maintaining the Kingston Area Seed Saving Initiative Kathy is a Champion of Food Security, Environmental Stewardship, and Sense of Community. Thank you Kathy!
Cedric Pepelea:
Cedric has been nominated for his role starting the student-run chapter of the non-profit ENACTUS at St. Lawrence College. He is an entrepreneur and energy conservation guru and Champion of Environmental Stewardship and Climate Action. Thank you Cedric!
Dan Hendry & Jeremy Da Costa:
Dan & Jeremy worked together to launch the Kingston Student Bus Pass Program. Starting with Grade 9 students the pilot program now provides free bus passes to all high school grades. As a result transit ridership in Kingston has increased by over 500,000 rides! They are Champions of Climate Action, Sustainable Transportation, and Sense of Community. Thank you Dan and Jeremy.
Dan Hendry:
Dan Hendry has been nominated for his relentless commitment to sustainability in Kingston. He has worked with the Limestone District School Board, St. Lawrence College’s ENACTUS Program, and Sustainable Kingston. He is a Champion of Climate Action, Sense of Community, and Sustainable Transportation. Thank you Dan!
Dianne Dowling:
Dianne Dowling is a local dairy farmer and the President of Local 316 of the National Farmer's Union. For the past 15 years, she has been a tireless Champion of Food Security, Environmental Stewardship, and Economic Prosperity. Thank you Dianne!
Elizabeth Visser:
Elizabeth is the youngest nominee for The Sustainable Leadership Awards. She is an active part of the Sustainability community and a committed vegetarian. At only 12 years old Elizabeth is a Champion of Environmental Stewardship and Sense of Community. Thank you Elizabeth!
Gillian Moss:
Gillian has been nominated for her work as the head of the Community Response to Neighborhood Concerns a volunteer group committed to making life better for residents of North Kingston. Gillian has worked tirelessly, with little fanfare, to bring projects like the Shannon Park splash pad and the new skateboard park to fruition. She is a Champion of Economic Prosperity and Sense of Community. Thank you Gillian!
Kimberly Sutherland Mills:
Kimberly has been nominated for her work with the Blue Dot Movement through which she has advocated for the Environmental Bill of Rights. Her work led Kingston’s City Council to recognize its citizen’s rights to clean air, water, and food. She is a Champion of Environmental Stewardship and Sense of Community. Thank you Kim!
Teri Giroux:
Teri has been nominated for her work supporting underprivileged members of the Kingston community. She is a Champion of Economic Prosperity and Sense of Community and she has galvanized the community at Crossroads United Church to collect coupons and donate to those in need. Thank you Teri!
Bill McAuslan:
Another member of the Crossroads United Church, Bill has been nominated for his work with Immigrant Services Kingston and Area (ISKA). As Minister, he opened the Church to the ISKA Youth Group and is now planning a community garden. Bill is a Champion of Sense of Community and Food Security. Thank you Bill!
